The Futurama creation history

«Futurama» is an American satirical cartoon serial created at the «20th Century Fox» studio by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, the authors of Simpsons cartoon serial. In the majority of series the action occurs in New-New-York City in year 3000.

In the USA the serial was shown on Fox Network from March, 28th, till August, 10th, 2003. After that it was sold to the Comedy Central television network, on its channel new seasons are shown from the beginning of 2008.
New 26 episodes is planned for the middle of 2010.
The serial begins with the pizza delivery boy from New York Philip J. Fry who was accidentally, or so it seemed at first sight, (but one can learn more details about it only in the tenth series of the fourth season «Fry’s Riddle») frozen in the cryogenic chamber exactly at 00 hours 00 minutes 00 seconds on January, 1st, 2000. He was defreezed one thousand years later, on December, 31st, 2999, and found himself in the city of the future New-New-York.
The retrofuturistic world of “Futurama” is not a utopia, but also not an anti-utopia. The future world here is not drawn as ideal, people still deal with many basic problems of the XXth century. The future in the serial in many respects is similar to the present: same political figures and celebrities survive in the form of heads in glass jars; TV stays the main entertainment; Internet still is slow and filled with pornography and spam, problem of global warming is still urgent, as well as bureaucracy, alcoholism and etc., etc.

«Futurama» sometimes contains references to “Simpsons” and on the contrary. In the first series Fry flies on an underwater transport pipe and sees three-eyed fish from “Simpsons”. In one of the early episodes of “Futurama” the crew is sent to destroy a big sphere of dust in space. On it Bender finds a doll representing Bart Simpson and saying «Eat my shorts!»
